VIA earnings in June nearly double from month earlier

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Seventy-seven companies yesterday reported stellar results with unprecedented revenue highs in June.

They were led by VIA Technologies (威盛), which reported revenues of NT$851.5 million in June for growth of 199.75 percent month-on-month and 168.61 percent year-on-year, ranking it among the leading performers in Taiwan's technology sector.

The company attributed the marked growth in June to increased tablet orders from the mainland. Industry commentators stated that the popularity of tablets in China is expected to continue expanding. They also expect VIA's performance to exceed its current figures in the third quarter as demand drives up the average selling price for the company's components offerings.

Cher Wang (王雪紅), chairwoman of HTC, also holds a board position at VIA. Market commentators expressed hope for a similar turnaround by the handset maker following a streak of lackluster performances.

Overall the best performers were from semiconductor and related sectors, including MPI (旺矽), King Yuan Electronics (京元電), STATSChipPAC (台星科) and Inotera Memories (華亞科).

Sector leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC, 台積電) yesterday reported stellar June results, setting new records in monthly, quarterly and annual rates of growth.

For last month, the company reported consolidated revenues of NT$54.3 billion, representing unprecedented month-on-month growth of 4.3 percent, and year-on-year growth of 24.3 percent.

Throughout the second quarter, the company accumulated revenues of NT$155.887 billion, up by 14.7 percent from the previous quarter. As of June the company recorded revenues of NT$288.64 billion, up 23.5 percent year-on-year.

TSMC's 28-nanometer fabrication process is expected to grow threefold this year, with advancement in the 20 and 16-nanometer process planned for next year. Xilinx, one of the company's major U.S.-based clients, indicated that its industry-leading 20-nanometer based programmable logic device has entered the production phase at TSMC's fabs. The product is about 1 to 1 1/2 years ahead of the competition, said Xilinx.

The biotechnology sector was led by top performers including Formosa Laboratories (台耀) and Sunmax (雙美), which has gained success in international markets following assistance from the government, according to market commentators.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's solar panel industry appears to be emerging from a long-term slump, as order volumes are diverted from the mainland after the EU increased tariffs on solar panels originating from China.

Taiwan's financial sector was led by the Taiwan Business Bank (台企銀), Bank of Kaohsiung (高雄銀), and Hua Nan Financial Holdings (華南金控).
