TAIPEI -- Shipments of Apple Inc.'s iPads will see substantial growth in 2013, after having posted “gloomy and dim” sales figures recently, according to a local flat screen research institute.

A total of 82.1 million iPads will be shipped around the world in 2013, 25 percent more than in 2012, WitsView said in a statement Thursday.

Although the 9.7-inch iPad is currently on the defensive against the 7.85-inch iPad mini or other low-priced tablets, it is likely to regain its competitive edge after the launch of a new generation iPad, expected later this year, the statement said.
