Platinum giant Implats increases wages amid South Africa strikes

JOHANNESBURG -- The world's number two platinum miner Implats on Thursday announced it will increase worker salaries in South Africa, amid a wave of illegal strikes that have crippled rival producers.

The pay hike, to be implemented on Oct. 1, is the second awarded to workers in the Rustenburg platinum belt after miners at Lonmin sealed 11- to 22-percent increases following a deadly six-week stand-off that killed 46 people.
