Peugeot Citroen to halt production in Slovakia as result of low demand

BRATISLAVA -- French auto giant PSA Peugeot Citroen said Thursday it would halt production for 21 days this fall at its Slovak plant due to low demand.

"The demand for new cars in Europe has been falling for the past 11 months and this trend reflects in the reduction of several carmakers' output," the company's spokesman Peter Svec told AFP.

The plant suspended production for 39 days in 2011, when it assembled 177,000 cars. The company said it would not lay off any of its 3,500 employees over the reduced output.
