IC testing, packaging leaders upbeat on prospects for Q3

Siliconware Precision Industries Ltd. (SPIL) and Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE), Taiwan's two leading integrated circuit (IC) testing and packaging firms, yesterday both expressed upbeat sentiment for the third quarter.

SPIL forecast sales in the current quarter will grow 2 to 5 percent on a quarter-on-quarter basis, said Lin Wen-po, SPIL chairman, during the company's investors' meeting yesterday.

The company had sales of NT$16.55 billion in the second quarter, a rise of 12 percent year-on-year and 9.4 percent quarter-on-quarter, in keeping with its own estimate of 7 to 11 percent. Net profit was NT$1.47 billion, translating into gross profit margin of 19.3 percent and earnings per share of NT$0.48. For the first half, net profit was NT$2.361 billion, or earnings per share of NT$0.76.

As for the third quarter, sales are expected to grow two to five percent, Lin said. Based on the firm's second-quarter revenue, sales for the third quarter are expected to fall between NT$16.88 billion and NT$17.37 billion.

He further forecast third-quarter gross profit margin will hit 20 to 22 percent. Given the 19.3 percent margin for the second quarter was the highest in 10 quarters, the third-quarter figure is expected to be the highest in 11 quarters.

Separately, ASE forecast yesterday testing and packaging shipments in the third quarter will grow four to six percent from the second quarter.

The firm reported at its investors' meet second quarter sales of NT$45.872 billion, a rise of 6.4 percent quarter-on-quarter. Yet sales from the firm's main business grew 11.1 percent, in line with market expectations.

Net profit was NT$3.202 billion, or earnings per share of NT$0.49. Gross profit margin for the second quarter was 19.3 percent.
