FPG moves to cushion blow from suspension

Top executives of the Formosa Plastics Group (FPG) held an emergency meeting yesterday morning to seek measures to cushion the heavy blow dealt to the group by the Cabinet's request for the FPG to suspend the operations of all the related factories in its petrochemical complex in the Mailiao offshore industrial zone of Yunlin County following a spate of seven fires within one year.

Wang Wen-chao, chairman of the Formosa Petrochemical Corp., said at the end of the emergency meeting that the FPG has fully understood the Cabinet's request and will do its best to comply.

But Wang said the Cabinet's request will constitute a far-reaching impact on the operation of the FPG petrochemical complex in the Mailiao industrial zone, as it covers almost all the plants in the complex.

Wang continued that the FPG will immediately negotiate with the government on the "enforcement rules" for the production-suspension request.

Based on the Cabinet's request, at least 30 out of a total of 66 plants in the complex will face immediate production suspension, and other plants will be suspended in stages to facilitate safety checkup, leading to the virtually across-the-board suspension of the entire petrochemical complex in Mailiao industrial zone.
