Acer tops list for compensation to board members at NT$95.42 mil.

Acer Inc. last year gave out the highest pay to its board members, who each received NT$95.42 million, reported the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) yesterday, citing companies' consolidated financial statements.

According to the TSE, Acer was the most generous among Taiwan's publicly listed firms by giving out a total of NT$667 million to directors and supervisors, while Compal disbursed NT$480 million.

Acer directors and supervisors each had a base salary of NT$3.95 million last year, far behind the over NT$10 million for those of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Advanced Semiconductor Engineering.

However, combined with employees' salaries also received, the Acer directors and supervisors each got about NT$95.42 million last year.

TSMC, meanwhile, gave a base salary of NT$11.542 million to each board member, who received a total of NT$61.892 million after adding in employees' salaries.

As for financial firms, Chinatrust Financial Holding led with NT$48.05 million in board member pay and employees' salary to each director and supervisor.

For traditional companies, Uni-President led the pack by giving out a total of NT$457 million to directors and supervisors, who each got NT$47.775 million.

TSE releases the figures each year to see if there is a "fat cat" situation at any publicly traded firms. "Fat cats" refers to directors and supervisors who do a lousy job at their respective firms, yet are rewarded with handsome pay and bonuses.
