Taiwan to step up influential LTE research: Inventec CTOShe made the remarks while attending a 4G forum held in Taipei yesterday. The event was held from July 11 to 12. LTE is a 4G technology, a step up from the currently adopted 3G. During the forum, participants discussed various overarching issues facing operators. According to Chen, a major problem facing operators is disruption, due to a lack of radio spectrum wide enough for LTE signals, which have wavelengths of 20 MHz. A reshuffling of the radio spectrum to accommodate LTE is an issue facing nations seeking to popularize the technology, she said. As for Taiwan, the National Communications Commission may also need to work on a spectrum reshuffle, given it has allotted portions of the spectrum to operators of WiMAX, a competing 4G technology, she noted. As for quality of communications, major progress has been made in this area, thanks to operators' efforts to make new LTE standards during the annual 3GPP conference, she said. Operators still need to develop standards regulating communications between small base stations, large base stations and relay stations, she said. As for end-user applications, 3D imaging is expected to be popular and is still being worked on by developers, she said. Meanwhile developers are also working on apps allowing users to capture words or phrases with the camera on their devices and get them translated into another language, she added. | |||||||||||||
