Siemens unveils new model for green urban planning

Siemens Taiwan has recently unveiled its "Future Smart Building for Energy Interactive Model," aiming to incorporate intelligent and green designs into urban planning.

According to Siemens Taiwan, the ongoing and growing challenges brought about by global warming, urbanization and other anthropogenic factors have made "intelligent" and "green" designs two of the most essential aspects of modern urban development.

This model will demonstrate how building energy consumption can be transformed from demand-based to supply-based, depending on the availability of renewable energy.

Utilizing a building management system (BMS) as the building's backbone, renewable energy technologies will be seamlessly integrated into the smart grid and allow the building to determine how to generate, adjust and consume energy from various sources in the most optimal way.

To create a green city, all buildings must work towards becoming both smart and green, Siemens said.

In mid-February, the Siemens and the Economic Intelligence Unit published the "Asia Green City Index," which pointed out the fact that Asia is currently facing an unprecedented degree of urbanization and population growth. For the past five years alone, Asia's urban population has been increasing by approximately 100,000 people per day.

"Urban centers are responsible for 75 percent of the world's energy consumption and 80 percent of the global population's greenhouse gas emissions," said Peter Weiss, CEO of Siemens Ltd. Taiwan. "Asian cities must incorporate sustainable measures into their urban expansion so that there can be real progress on climate change and future sustainability."
