News Corp.'s MySpace plans to add music subscriptions this year

NEW YORK -- MySpace will probably add a subscription music service this year as News Corp. seeks to increase revenue from online content at its social-networking site and elsewhere, Jon Miller, head of digital operations, said Tuesday. “People don't want to think too much about purchasing,” so a subscription “all-you-can-eat” model for selling online is the best option, Miller said Tuesday at a conference in Cannes, France.

Publishers and broadcasters such as News Corp., owner of the Wall Street Journal, are trying to increase revenue from online content as the Internet has reduced sales of traditional media such as newspapers and CDs.

This year will be the year of “terms of trade” for content providers, as they agree on terms with companies such as Google Inc., owner of the world's most popular search engine, to determine who gets paid and how for content provision, Miller said. Advertising alone isn't enough to pay for such content, he said.
