Compal raises Q1 outlook after Jan. shipments rose

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Compal Electronics Inc., the world's largest maker of notebook computers by units, will post January sales and shipments that are higher than December, Chief Financial Officer Gary Lu said in a phone interview Tuesday, declining to provide figures ahead of the official announcement later Tuesday.

Higher customer orders mean Compal will post first-quarter shipments that will drop less than 5 percent from the 13 million units it sold in the fourth-quarter, and better than an earlier forecast for a 10 percent decline, Lu said.
