Daimler to test rental service for Smart cars

STUTTGART -- Daimler AG, the world's second- largest maker of luxury vehicles, is trying out a rental business for its Smart minicars in Austin, Texas, expanding a pilot program that began last year in Germany. The test in partnership with Austin initially will include 200 Fortwo cars, which will be parked around the city for rental to people who register for the service, the Stuttgart, Germany- based company said Wednesday in a statement. Daimler calls the project Car2go.

“If these pilots prove to be successful, we would like to turn this into a large-scale profitable business,” Robert Henrich, founder of the program, said in an interview.
