Chi Mei says no mass worker movement to TCL

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Chi Mei Optoelectronics, Taiwan's second largest TFT-LCD maker, has denied reports there is a mass migration of employees to TCL Corp., China's biggest television manufacturer, said the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), yesterday.

Both the Financial Times and the Economic Daily News, Taiwan's two major financial papers, yesterday led with the story “over 100” Chi Mei employees have switched over to TCL, which is planning to build a 8.5-generation factory in collaboration with the government of Shenzhen City in southern Guangdong Province. The papers cited a mainland Chinese financial magazine.

Among those who have left Chi Mei were Chen Li-yi, director of Chi Mei's TV panel business unit, and Chen Cheng-jung, technical director of the unit, the Financial Times reported.

Upon seeing the reports, head of MOEA, Shih Yen-shiang, asked the Investment Commission under the ministry to check with Chi Mei, MOEA said.

Chi Mei gave its assurance to MOEA there is no such mass migration, and said the papers might have been misinformed, the ministry said.
