Shares up slightly after hitting 36-month high

TAIPEI--The Taiwan Stock Exchange's main index continued a winning streak Tuesday, gaining 0.21 percent after hitting a 36-month high of 9,036.12 a day earlier.
The weighted index closed 19.17 points higher at 9,055.29, on turnover of NT$82.61 billion (US$2.74 billion).
Shares in the local cement sector posted the most significant gains, rising 0.9 percent, followed by a 0.4-increase in banking and financial stocks as well as in the plastics and chemicals sector, and a 0.2 percent rise in the machinery and electronics sector.
The textile sector fell the most, ending down 0.3 percent.
Construction and foodstuff shares shed 0.2 percent, while textiles, and paper and pulp stocks fell 0.1 percent.
A total of 4.42 billion shares changed hands. Losers outnumbered gainers 3,139 to 2,317, with 618 stocks remaining unchanged.
Altogether, the three major institutional investors made net purchases of NT$1.12 billion-worth of shares.
One analyst said that the Taiex is expected to continue its uptrend if the momentum continues, judging from recent trading turnover and volume.
US Dollar Rises to NT$30.171 on Taipei Forex
The U.S. dollar rose against the Taiwan dollar Tuesday, gaining NT$0.011 to close at the day's high of NT$30.171.
Turnover totaled US$723 million during the trading session.
