SINGAPORE -- Singapore Airlines Ltd., the world's second-largest carrier by market value, reported t

hird-quarter operating profit jumped 51 percent as the introduction of the A380 superjumbo helped lure more passengers.

Operating profit rose to S$674.6 million (US$477 million) in the three months ended Dec. 31, the company said in a statement Friday. Net income was little changed at S$590 million because of a one-time gain a year earlier. Revenue increased 13 percent to S$4.28 billion.

Singapore Air filled 84.3 percent of seats in December, the highest in at least 18 years, according to Bloomberg data, on holiday travel demand to Australia and Europe. British Airways Plc and Singapore Air are among carriers benefiting from more business class passengers, even as fuel costs increase and concern of a recession in the U.S. grows.
