Pakistan approves project for US$12.6 bil. hydro dam

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan’s government Tuesday approved the construction of a multi-billion dollar dam to produce 4,500 megawatts of power to help overcome the nation’s severe electricity shortages, a minister said. The 12.6 billion dollar Diamir-Bhasha dam will be built in northern Pakistan on the Indus river over the next seven years, water and power minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said.

“It is a great project and the government is taking several steps to overcome electricity shortages and provide affordable and sufficient power supply to the people,” Ashraf told a news conference. Pakistan suffered major power outages earlier this year which authorities blamed on a lack of water for hydro-electric facilities.
