South Korea, Australia make pact on energy

SEOUL -- South Korea is poised to increase imports of liquefied natural gas from Australia, as well as investments in mining projects Down Under, with a new agreement made in Perth Monday, the South Korean government said. The deal, which would increase South Korean cooperation in mining projects for coal, uranium, copper and zinc, was the result of the 25th Korea-Australia Joint Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources Consultation and Cooperation, held in Perth.

A growth in the volume of liquefied natural gas imports from Australia would boost South Korea's ability to meet its energy consumption needs, an official from the country's Ministry of Knowledge Economy told the German Press Agency dpa by phone.
