SEOUL -- South Korea's LG Display, one of the world's top liquid crystal display panel makers, said

Friday it would invest almost US$1 billion to increase production at its plant.

Chief executive officer Kwon Young Soo disclosed the one-trillion-won (US$957.4 million) spending plan when he met investment analysts on Thursday, said spokesman Park Sang-Bae.

Production capacity at the company's plant in Gumi, southeast of Seoul, will be raised in the first half of next year to 230,000 panels a month from the current 170,000.

The display panels are mostly used for monitors for desktop and laptop computers.
