Toshiba, SanDisk invest US$16 bil. in production

TOKYO -- Japanese home electronics company Toshiba Corp was expected to jointly invest 1.8 trillion yen (US$16.7 billion) with its U.S. partner SanDisk Corp to increase semiconductor production, Japanese business daily The Nikkei said Monday. The business expansion would see two new plants to be completed by March 2009 to produce NAND flash memory chips for mobile phones and digital cameras.

Toshiba, which is the second largest NAND flash memory maker, considers semiconductor production as its mainstream business, and it is expected to withdraw from next-generation HD DVD business.
