Japan warns top mobile carriers for ‘misleading’ ads

TOKYO -- Japan’s two largest mobile phone operators agreed Friday to alter advertisements after a government watchdog warned them that they misled customers amid a price battle in the sector. The Fair Trade Commission told industry leader NTT DoCoMo Inc and second-ranked KDDI Corp that their advertisements on discounts were attracting customers on unfair grounds. The two companies pledged to respect the order. “We will be careful from now on to produce advertisements that are comprehensible to customers,” said KDDI spokeswoman Yoko Watanabe. NTT DoCoMo will review the company’s marketing rules to make advertisements that reflect the correct information, said spokesman Ken Tamaki.
