Buyers from new markets expected to dominate Indonesian trade expo

JAKARTA -- With falling demand for its goods in key export destinations, Indonesia will see a sizeable number of potential buyers from new export markets during this year's Trade Expo Indonesia, the country's top international trade exhibition.

Buyers from nontraditional markets, including from Africa, the Middle East and South America, made up around 70 percent of the 4,326 participants registered so far, the Trade Ministry's director general for national export development Gusmardi Bustami said on Tuesday in Jakarta.

"The presence of these buyers can surely help support our strategy to further diversify exports to non-traditional markets," he said during a press conference at the ministry's office.

Business meetings between local traders and their overseas counterparts and transactions generated by the trade expo could also boost Indonesia's trade performance amid a continuing slump in exports recorded throughout this year, as contact between business players might continue after the event, Gusmardi added.
