Inco says strike over, production on target

JAKARTA -- International Nickel Indonesia said Monday it was optimistic about hitting its 2007 production target after workers at its mine in South Sulawesi agreed to end an 11-day strike. Representatives of the firm’s board and the workers’ union signed a deal on Sunday afternoon, said Janus Siahaan, a spokesman for the company, which is also known as Inco. The strike cost Inco five million pounds of lost output, but the company was optimistic about hitting its 2007 production target of 165 million pounds of nickel-in-matte, Siahaan said. Around 500 of the 3,500 permanent workers had gone on strike initially, demanding higher wages and bonuses due to high nickel prices.
