India’s wheat output may fall as temperatures rise

MUMBAI -- India’s wheat production may decline as much as 17 percent in the next 10 years as winter temperatures rise in the country, a report by an industry group said.

Yields per hectare (2.5 acres) may drop as much as 0.45 metric tons from the current 2.7 tons because of an estimated 0.5 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India said in its report.

Temperatures may rise unless India, the world’s second-largest producer of wheat, takes emission-reducing measures, the report said. A change in climate would prompt farmers to shift to barley, maize and other crops that are unaffected by higher temperatures, according to the report.
