Hong Kong retail sales jump in December

HONG KONG -- Shoppers in Hong Kong pushed up the city's retail sales by 16 percent in December, fresh evidence that consumer confidence is improving and driving an economic recovery, the government said yesterday. The value of retail sales rose for the fourth consecutive month to HK$29.4 billion (US$3.8 billion), the Census and Statistics Department said.

The rise outpaced November's 11.7 percent increase and beat a median 11.7 percent forecast of seven economists surveyed earlier by Dow Jones Newswires.
