Updated Wednesday, March 17, 2010 9:48 am TWN, The China Post news staff Daily quota of Chinese visitors to Taiwan raised to 6,000 until Apr. 2Last Friday, about 800 Chinese tourists failed to obtain tourist permits in time and thus were forced to cancel or postpone their trips across Taiwan last weekend. Receiving many complaints from the travel agencies industry, the National Immigration Agency (NIA), the Tourism Bureau and the Mainland Affairs Council decided to raise the daily quota of Chinese visitors from 4,311 to 6,000. However, the travel agencies industry worried that the temporary solution seemed unable to handle numerous Chinese applications for tourist permits during peak travel seasons, such as spring. According to a cross-strait agreement, Taiwan accepts up to 3,000 Chinese travelers per day; that said, the NIA can distribute tourist permits to a total of 4,311 Chinese visitors a day. As a result of the growing number of Chinese tourists, it seems necessary for the existing quota to be adjusted as the NIA has experienced an explosion of applications for more than 8 days; so far, over 2,800 cases have been waiting to be reviewed. The additional tourist permits in the following weeks, around 25,000, will be deducted from the unused openings, around 29,000, in January and February. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%.
