ATM emergency phones to remain functional

Taiwan's financial regulator will see to it that banks' ATM emergency phones will stay functional at all times, it said, yesterday.

The statement by the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) came after media reports that calls made from ATM emergency phones at certain banks are not answered at night time or at weekends, rendering customers helpless when they have questions about withdrawing or transferring money using ATMs.

FSC said they had a meeting with bankers yesterday, asking them to make sure that ATM emergency phones work 24 hours a day.

FSC also said it has asked bankers to make sure that ATMs' cash adequacy rate remains at 95 percent throughout the Lunar New Year break, so that people can get cash at all times.

The break will begin on Feb. 13. All banks in Taiwan will close for the week between Feb. 14 and 20.
