Updated Thursday, February 4, 2010 11:06 am TWN, By Chinmei Sung, Bloomberg Taiwan may announce relaxing of China LCD limit controls“There is chance that the Cabinet will announce” the move before the Chinese New Year that begins Feb. 14, Woody Duh, head of the Industrial Development Bureau at the ministry, told reporters in Taipei yesterday. Taiwan currently limits investment on the mainland. AU Optronics Corp. and other Taiwanese LCD and chipmakers can't manufacture their most advanced technologies in China due to 60 years of tensions across the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan is reassessing those controls as it tries to ensure its industries don't lose the race to tap the Chinese market. While Premier, Wu Den-yih, had said Taiwan would decide in January which industries will be able to invest in China, there was no announcement. Taiwanese technology companies expect a new round of trade liberalization with China to make them more competitive in the world's fastest-growing major economy. The government expects to begin briefing lawmakers on a proposed Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement, or trade accord, with China in March, Duh said. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%.
