Internet phone sales increase 50% in peak season

December is a busy season due to students shopping for items before traveling abroad to study, prompting a jump in online sales of electronic products.

A major Taiwanese online shopping Web site yesterday published the top electronic goods purchased by students studying abroad: Internet phones, electronic dictionaries, electronic rice cookers and digital voice recorders.

According to the site, PChome, during the two periods from July to August and November to December, sales of Internet phones such as those used with the online calling program Skype increased by 50 percent each month.

During the two periods, the sales volume of electronic dictionaries and electronic rice cookers increased another 47 percent and 30 percent, respectively, compared with the rest of the year.

PChome announced a sale for students who plan to study abroad. Consumers can pick up a Skype phone, an electronic dictionary or electronic rice cooker at discounted prices.
