More home buys in northern Taiwan than south: brokerage

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Northern Taiwan saw more home purchases in October than southern Taiwan, said brokerage firm Taiwan Housing, yesterday.

According to a survey released by the firm, of Taiwan's six major metropolises, three saw home purchase increases in October from September, namely the Greater Hsinchu area, Taoyuan County and Taipei City. The margin of increase was 12.4 percent, 12.2 percent and 7.1 percent, respectively. All three are located in northern Taiwan.

Meanwhile, Kaohsiung saw a decline in home purchases in October. Purchases fell 5.9 percent in the month from September.

Separately, Chushang Real Estate did its own survey, finding home purchases in Taiwan in October increased by 13 percent from September.

The brokerage firm attributed the increase to the soon signing of a cross-strait financial memorandum of understanding (MOU) and an economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA).

In a related story, convenience was ranked No. 1 factor when people purchase houses, according to a survey by Home Living.

The poll found 29.6 percent of homebuyers believe convenience was the most important factor when purchasing homes, followed by neighbors, 25.27 percent, and management of the building.

Of note, homebuyers looked down on building administrative fees, with 5.3 percent thinking they were the most important factor.
