Chinese tourist arrivals largely up in first nine months

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The number of Chinese nationals visiting Taiwan was largely up in the first nine months of this year, reflecting measures taken by the government last year to facilitate trips to Taiwan by Chinese travelers, National Immigration Agency (NIA) Director General Hsieh Li-kung said Wednesday.

A total of 426,782 Chinese nationals arrived in Taiwan between January and September, far surpassing the 89,256 who visited in the first nine months of 2008, the NIA reported.

Hsieh attributed the increase to several measures adopted by the government, including opening Taiwan's doors wider to Chinese tourists in mid-July last year and launching nonstop daily flights between Taiwan and China.

Speaking at a seminar on border control strategies being held at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Hsieh acknowledged, however, that the travel liberalization and more frequent cross-strait exchanges inevitably has had an impact on national security.

To learn from border control approaches adopted by advanced countries, experts and immigration officials from 22 countries, including Australia, Britain, Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands were invited by the NIA to give speeches on the topic at the seminar.

Speakers from Australia, Britain, Germany and the United States introduced how they were applying new technologies to step up border control efforts, while Canadian and Dutch officials focused on how to crack down on cross-border human trafficking and on their preventive efforts to wipe out document forgery.
