LED standards can be set via cross-strait cooperation: Liu

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Companies and research organizations in Taiwan and China engaged in the light emitting diode (LED) lighting industry will seek to cooperate with each other to jointly establish the LED standards on the world market, said Premier Liu Chao-shiuan.

Liu made the remarks when visiting Motech Industrial Inc. and Epistar Corp. at the Southern Taiwan Science Park in Tainan County yesterday.

Executives of the suppliers of solar energy products and LED components urged the Cabinet led by Liu to push the statute for renewable energy through the Legislative Yuan and provide assistance to the companies for accelerated development.

Premier Liu said again that the statute will be definitely ratified to lay the guidelines for the development of green energy sources and industry.

The pool of resources and talent in both the public and private sectors will help the LED industry to establish independent technological know-how, he said.

An inter-ministerial platform can be erected if necessary, the premier said.

He also said the “bridge-building project” proposed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) for closer cooperation with China will be discussed at a meeting in June.

Closer cooperation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait will not just help companies in Taiwan and China to adopt the same standards for the LED industry and may also push the criteria into international standards, Liu noted.

As part of the renewable energy development program adopted by the Cabinet Thursday, the installation of LED traffic lights all around Taiwan will be completed by 2011.
