Updated Monday, February 9, 2009 3:22 pm TWN, By Deborah Kuo, CNA 76% of science park workers forced to take unpaid days offA survey conducted by the HSP Administration at the beginning of February found that 56 companies in HSP, or 12 percent of the total number of companies operating in HSP, have given more than 100,000 workers total unpaid days off since late last year. The 100,000 employees constitute 76 percent of the total number of workers and operators in the whole HSP, according to the park administration. Of the 56 companies, 49 have asked all of their employees to take unpaid days off, while the other seven companies have asked some of their staff to do so. The number of unpaid leave days averages one to two days per week, the survey found. Meanwhile, according to tallies compiled by the HSP Administration, 1,050 HSP employees were laid off in January, representing a decline of 46 percent from December 2008, when 1,950 workers were retrenched. The figure, however, was a steep increase of 5.56 times the number in January 2008. The Cabinet-level Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics reported in January that the number of unemployed people in Taiwan totaled 549,000 in December 2008, the highest since October 2003.
