Women faint after receiving gov't shopping vouchers

In Taipei County, the country's largest administrative district, three women, aged 74, 51 and 27 respectively, passed out after receiving the precious paper bills in the morning and were immediately sent to hospital, they said.

Also, a 30-year-old housewife from Tucheng Township and another 45-year-old woman from Chunghe City reportedly fainted for the same reason but recovered more quickly.

Some causes of the unexplained fainting were harmless, including standing for too long on an empty stomach and emotional upset, firefighters said.

Fainting, also called syncope, is a sudden loss of consciousness. It occurs when the blood pressure drops and not enough oxygen reaches the brain, medical experts point out.
