Mandarin airlines begins Kaohsiung-Seoul services

SEOUL -- Taiwan’s Mandarin Airlines has begun direct regularly scheduled flights between Kaohsiung and Seoul in an expansion of its current charter service on the route, according to an airline official.

Effectively yesterday, Mandarin Airlines, which operates the only service on the route, provides five regularly scheduled flights per week between Kaohsiung International Airport and Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, according to Yiang Tzung-da, general manager of the Korean branch of China Airlines, which is Mandarin Airlines’ parent company.

The expanded service comes in the wake of Mandarin Airlines’ offer of two charters a week on the route from Oct. 29 to Nov. 30 for tour groups. Taiwan’s Uni Air, which previously operated regularly scheduled flights between the southern Taiwan port city and the Korean capital, canceled the route Aug. 16 due to cost considerations.

Industry analyst said that the reopening of the route is important in light of the fact that Kaohsiung will host the World Games next July, which is Taiwan’s first opportunity to host a major international sports competition.
