No obvious lay-off trend at Hsinchu Science Park

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- There has been no obvious tide of lay-offs among companies in the Hsinchu Science Park in the face of slumping export trade as a result of the global economic downturn, Tu Chi-hsiang, a deputy chief of the science park, said yesterday.

Responding to a recent series of news reports on salary cuts and redundancies by companies in the country’s science-based industrial parks, Tu said that so far, he has not seen an obvious lay-off trend at the Hsinchu facility, known as “Taiwan’s Silicon Valley.”

Tu also noted that the number of disputes in the park has not increased this year, adding that the science park authorities received 45 complaints about possible disputes between management and workers in the first 11 months of this year, compared to 47 in 2007.

According to recent business and industrial news reports, major high-technology manufacturers have witnessed slides in their production line utilization rates over the past several months. Among them, United Microelectronics Corp. and Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp. have seen utilization rates fall to a record low of 55 percent.

Chipmakers such as Powerchip and ProMOS have also cut production due to decreased demand from home and abroad, according to the reports.
