Experts assess prospects, developments in eco-textiles

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Experts from Taiwan and the international textile industries joined yesterday in a series of seminars held on the second day of the 2008 Textile International Forum and Exhibition (TIFE 2008), on the theme of “New Perspective in Eco-Textile.”

The three-day-event, sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, is organized at the International Convention Center of National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) — N2, XuZhou Rd., ZhongZheng District, Taipei City — by Taiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI), the primary international R&D institute for textile technology and services in Taiwan.

During the forums, a total of 18 experts from Taiwan, Japan, Switzerland, the United States, Germany and the UK shared their insight on the commercial development of eco-textiles and their technical specifications, including Professor Stanislaw Slomkowski, director and head of the Department Center of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies at the Polish Academy of Sciences, and Detlef Fischer, vice president of Bluesign technologies a.g., Switzerland.

“In today’s management of complex environment, health and safety problems, brands are facing issues with their supply chain as customers want safer products,” Fisher told The China Post.

“More and more people are thinking of what they are buying,” he added, noting that it leads to huge pressure to major brands such as Nike or the North Face, which have major suppliers in Taiwan.

“The Bluesign standard creates both transparency and opportunities for Taiwan,” whose regulations are more stringent than those of developing countries such as China, he explained.

Although the primary role of “natural” textiles was protection from the elements, Slomkowski pointed out that the increasing importance of synthetic fibers in today’s textiles industry underscores the need for more biodegradable polymers.

With the methods of production of textiles and their applications changing in recent ears, he stressed that the reduction of the environmental impact of textile production is among the most important and challenging problems awaiting solution.
