Formosa shuts crude unit for scheduled maintenance

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Formosa Petrochemical Corp., Taiwan’s only publicly traded oil refiner, shut a crude distillation unit yesterday for scheduled maintenance.

The company plans to restart the plant around the end of December, Spokesman Lin Keh-yen said by telephone in Taipei Friday.

Formosa Petrochemical, based in Mailiao on Taiwan’s west coast, has three crude distillation units, each with a capacity to process 180,000 barrels a day. These plants, which make up the bulk of refineries, heat crude oil to separate it into different fuel products.

Lin said Formosa Petrochemical is also operating its No. 1 and No. 2 ethylene plants at 80 percent to 85 percent of capacity while keeping the No. 3 unit closed because of weak demand.
