BioBusiness forum tackles the role of Asia in biotech global value chain

Dr. Liu Chung-cheng, general director, Biomedical Engineering Research Laboratory, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan, explained that the BioBusiness Asia 2008 aims at encouraging a wide range of participants to discuss the strategic role of Asia in the biotech value chain, and searching for innovative approaches to establish Asia as an indispensable link to the global industry.

“Big pharma’s patent expiration challenges, personalized medicine and globalization” are the three main ‘drivers of reinvention in the biotech industry,’ he said.

“Let’s hear the real deal-makers discuss and analyze the latest trends in partnering and provide insights into successful alliance formation,” he added.

BioBusiness Asia’s main organizer, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), indicated that over the past six years, the landmark conference has received full endorsement from the world’s leading biotech venture capitals and investors, such as TaiGen biotechnology Co., Inc. (Taiwan), Giza Venture Capital (Israel), PAC-Link Management Corp. (Taiwan), and GlobelImmune, Inc. (USA).

Besides ITRI, BioBusiness Asia 2008 has additional organizers, including Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), Taiwan Private Equity & Venture Capital Association, the Institute for Biotechnology and Medicine Industry, Taiwan Bio Industry Organization, the Development Center for Biotechnology, Ministry of Economic Affairs, the National Development Fund of the Executive Yuan, and Taipei Biotech Association.

Today’s activities include keynote addresses by several world-renowned experts on biotechnology, namely Elka Nir, managing director, Giza Venture Capital, Axel Polack, general partner, TVM Capital, Dr. Raju Kucherlapati, Genetics Department, Harvard Medical School, Center for Genetics and Genomics; Dr. Chang Hong-jen, chairman and CEO, YFY Biotech Management Company, David Bernstein, vice president, pharmaceutical Sciences and Regulatory Compliance, Bernstein CMC Regulatory Consulting, and, Timothy Rodell, CEO and president, GlobelImmune, Inc.

Elka Nir’s speech will be focused on “Global Trends and Challenges in Medical Devices - Venture Capital Investments,” while Axel Polack will give a keynote address on “Venture Capital Challenges for Selecting Biopharmaceutical Investment Opportunities & Case Studies.”

Further, 18 executives will be presenting on their firms’ latest products and inventions during a two-track session organized in the afternoon. The 18 firms are: Argenes (Japan); Ascenta (USA); Medigen (Taiwan); Mimotopes (Australia); SanBio (USA) SunTen Phyto (Taiwan); Arriva (USA); Genelabs (USA); SofSera Copr. (Japan); Vaxiva Biosciences (Japan); Epitomics (USA); Pacific Healthcare (Thailand); PharmEng International (Canada); Siro Clinpharm (India); BioTectid (Germany); Exatech Taiwan; Magqu (Taiwan), Nanotechnology Victoria (Australia); Stryker International (Singapore); and Suntec Medical (USA).
