A daily average of more than 344,000 people have entered since the May 1 opening, less than the target of about 380,000, or 70 million for the six-month event. The park has taken steps to reduce long queues and cut food prices to draw visitors. Daily average attendance was more than 400,000 in June and will likely climb in the summer months, Hong Hao, head of the Expo coordination office, said in a statement released yesterday. Organizers are adding more chairs, shade shelters, sprayed mist, fans and shuttle buses, Hong said. New Zealand Prime Minister John Key will come to the Expo on July 9. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have already visited. Shanghai allotted 28.6 billion yuan (US$4.2 billion) for building and operating the Expo, and 270 billion yuan on new infrastructure for the city, including two airport terminals and a three-year renovation of the historic riverside Bund.
