TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Huawei officially launched its new Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro smartphones in Taiwan on Monday.
The Mate 9 series was co-engineered with renowned camera company Leica and comes equipped with Leica's second generation dual-lens camera technology.
Tang Ting-feng (唐鼎烽), a product manager with Huawei's Taiwanese distributor Xunwei Technologies Co. (訊崴科技), said the Mate 9 phones would be revolutionary with regard to their speed, safety and camera technology.
Rock legend and Huawei brand ambassador Wu Bai (伍佰) made an appearance at the event, where he praised the phone's texture, sleek design and camera.
Wu, an avid photographer, said the phone's Summarit lens gave users of the phone top-quality Leica camera technology at an affordable price.
Huawei's General Manager of Technology in Taiwan Yung Hai (雍海) discussed Huawei's growth over the past year, including the sales of the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus, which had exceeded 9 million units sold globally by the end of November.
Yung also highlighted Huawei's ranking of No. 72 on Interbrand's 2016 Best Global Brands Report, a 16-spot upward shift from its rank of 88 in 2015.
While Yung did not spell out specific goals for the Mate 9 and the Mate 9 Pro, he did say these models would allow Huawei to further expand into the Taiwanese smartphone market.
The Huawei Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro are set to be released in Taiwan in mid-December.
This release is set to come hot on the heels of competitor Motorola's Taiwan release of its new Moto Z smartphone.
After the release of new models by Apple and Samsung in the past few months, Huawei's Mate 9 phones is set to enter a fiercely competitive smartphone market.
