TAIPEI--Innolux Corp. (群創光電), one of Taiwan's leading flat panel makers, ranked in 2013 as the largest automotive display supplier worldwide, according to market information advisory firm DisplaySearch.
In a recent research report, DisplaySearch said Innolux took a 23 percent share of the global automotive display market in 2013, ahead of Japan Display with 21 percent Inc. and Sharp Corp. of Japan with 18 percent.
South Korea's LG Display Co. was fourth with a 13 percent market share, followed by Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp. (友達光電) with 11 percent and Japan's Kyocera Corp. with 5 percent, the report showed.
“Until last year, Japanese makers led the automotive TFT LCD market because of the quality and reliability of their automotive display products,” DisplaySearch said in the report.
“However, stronger demand for standardization of automotive TFT LCD panels from multiple suppliers, along with the desire to lower costs, helped TFT LCD panel manufacturers in Taiwan and Korea increase automotive display shipments after 2011,” the advisory firm said.
It said Innolux, in particular, has taken advantage of the fast growing automotive aftermarket in China, where navigation systems and other automobile displays are installed after a car is sold.
Like the mature PC and TV panel markets, the automotive screen business has transformed into a market where suppliers provide mass production instead of customized items, and Taiwan's suppliers have taken the lead in terms of pricing and production capacity, the advisory firm said.
Citing a survey, it said demand for multi-function automotive screens is expected to continue to grow as electric cars and hybrid vehicles are gaining popularity and navigation systems have become the standard equipment in new auto models.
Over the past five years, automotive display shipments have nearly tripled, the report said.
It forecast that demand for automotive TFT LCD screens will exceed 100 million units worldwide and products will not be confined to navigation systems and audio/video entertainment functions but will be used in a wider range of applications such as special dashboards and head-up displays.
