Acer head urges Taiwan, China to collaborate on WiMAX

The chairman of PC giant Acer yesterday urged Taiwan and China to work together to develop WiMAX, a broadband wireless technology.

"By working together, Taiwan and China can create broadband wireless production value of over NT$10 trillion," Wang said. "Let's not let the Apples and Googles take away all of the market."

During a forum held in Taipei, Wang asked China not to devote all its resources to the competing TDLTE technology.

"It'll take about two to three years for TDLTE to mature," he said. "China should team up with Taiwan on WiMAX."

Separately, Wang said appreciation of the New Taiwan Dollar had only minor impact on Acer, the world's No. 2 PC vendor, because the company had taken precautions to avoid the risk.

"The impact can be sometimes negative and sometimes positive, depending on the portfolio management of our assets," Wang said. "We make daily efforts to avoid this risk, such as buying foreign currencies."

He declined to give a forecast on notebook sales in the fourth quarter, adding he'll wait until Acer's shareholder meeting on Oct. 29.

The Taiwan dollar has gained more than 4 percent against the U.S. dollar since the beginning of September.
