Origin Energy rejects BG Group’s takeover bid

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Origin Energy Ltd., Australia’s second largest power retailer, rejected a A$13.7 billion (US$13 billion) takeover bid Friday from British natural gas producer BG Group.

BG Group last month launched a hostile bid of A$15.50 cash per Origin share, almost four weeks after Origin rejected an unsolicited proposal from BG Group at the same price. That was revised up from an initial offering of A$14.70 a share in April. Origin said in a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange Friday that the board had considered BG Group’s offer and had decided to recommend that shareholders reject it.
