Central Taiwan Science Park in need of workers

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Central Taiwan Science Park in Taichung County will have to recruit at least

1,700 workers in 2008 due to its rapid business expansion, according to an investigation by the Cabinet-level Council of Labor Affairs (CLA).

Chung Chin-chi, director of the CLA's service center in charge of Taichung, Changhua and Nantou counties, said that enterprises based in the compound are expected to experience great manpower demands next year -- with 55 percent of some 1,700 jobs available for factory workers and 32 percent targeting computer hardware engineers.

According to Chung, a total of 89 companies have been approved to open shop in the science park in central Taiwan. Thirty-four enterprises have already kicked off operations in the compound, with approved investments of over NT$1.7 trillion and 16,000 employees, he said.

The Central Taiwan Science Park will have a demand for as many as 90,000 workers in the coming years -- a figure which may climb to 140,000 if job opportunities released by nearby industrial zones are also included, Chung said.

Thanks to its rapid growth, the park is expected to create even more jobs and to become the prime employment hub for job seekers in Taiwan's central regions, he added.
