Stock market rises with Wall Street recovery

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan shares rose slightly Wednesday, led by finance and electronics stocks as i

nvestors largely ignored a robust gain overnight on Wall Street.

The Weighted Price Index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange gained 15 points, or 0.17 percent, to 9018.12.

Fubon Financial rose 1.38 percent to New Taiwan dollars 29.35, while Cathay Financial climbed 2.54 percent to NT$72.6.

In Tuesday's session on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 180.54, or 1.38 percent, to 13,308.39, propelled by growing confidence that the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates at its next meeting on the subject.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 19.79, or 1.36 percent, to 1,471.49, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 38.36, or 1.50 percent, to 2,597.47.
