China retail sales up 17.1 percent in August

BEIJING -- Chinese retail sales, a key gauge of consumer spending, rose 17.1 percent in August compa

red with a year earlier, government data showed Wednesday.

Sales totaled 711.7 billion yuan (US$94.6 billion), the National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement, and compared with a 16.4-percent rise in July.

Sales in the first eight months of the year increased 15.7 percent from a year earlier to 5.62 trillion yuan, the bureau annouced.
