TAIPEI - Evergreen Group, parent of Taiwan’s biggest shipping line, may invest in a Chinese shipbuil

der to accelerate delivery of new vessels.

The company “is looking for opportunities overseas” and “China is one of the options,” Nieh Kuo-wei, a company spokesman, said by phone from Taipei yesterday. Possible locations for the venture include Quanzhou in China’s southern province of Fujian, he said.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world’s largest shipyard, and other shipbuilders have order backlogs of four years or more because China’s surging trade growth has created record demand for new ships. Evergreen Marine Corp., Evergreen’s largest unit, plans to order at least 20 containerships in the next decade to replace existing vessels, it said last year.
