H1 net profit of Asustek up 91 percent

Taiwan’s Asustek Computer Inc., the world’s largest motherboard maker, reported a 91 percent rise in first-half net profit that beat expectations Monday as demand for its products increased.

Net profit rose to NT$13.577 billion (US$411 million) from NT$7.117 billion in the first half a year ago and beat a consensus forecast of NT$12.147 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.

Revenue gained 76 percent to NT$370 billion, which compared with a forecast of NT$368.3 billion.

The Taiwan company said in July it planned to form a strategic alliance with Taiwanese digital camera maker Ability to expand its business in the consumer electronics sector. Asustek competes with Acer Inc. in its own-brand business and electronics maker Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. in its contract manufacturing segment.

Before the announcement, Asustek shares closed 1.37 percent higher at NT$89.00, outperforming the benchmark TAIEX index’s 0.32 percent gain.
