FPD Expo Taiwan 2007, IDMC ‘07 to open

Continuing what has been over the years a fruitful collaboration, representatives of SEMI and SID’s (Society for Information Display) Taipei Chapter held a joint press conference to announce what promises to be an exciting itinerary this week, as a pair of internationally recognized flat panel industry events are set to be held.

From July 4 to July 6, FPD (Flat Panel Display) Expo Taiwan 2007 will gather together 150 different exhibitors, both foreign and local, spread across some 460 individual booths in Exhibition Hall 1 of the Taipei World Trade Center. Meanwhile, the bi-annual International Display Manufacturing Conference (IDMC ‘07) will launch today, July 3, with a day of workshops, followed by a three-day symposium that will also run through July 6 — all held at the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC).

Terry Tsao, president of SEMI Southeast Asia, opened the press conference with a brief introduction to his organization, a global industry association with some 2,000 member companies all over the world. Started in 1970 to serve the semiconductor supply chain, SEMI now has 11 offices worldwide and serves companies in a broad range of industries, from semiconductors to flat panel displays to photovoltaic technologies.

“We’re focused on member needs,” Tsao stressed.

Toward that end, SEMI engages in a variety of activities, which include helping member companies reduce their costs and increase their profitability through development of industry standards, as well as supporting member interests before various governmental and regulatory authorities.

George Lin, Vice President of SEMI Global, FPD, added that among the company’s current “action items” is a newly launched Internet website (www.fpdtoday.org), the first dedicated to the global FPD manufacturing supply chain. The site will feature a wide array of industry news, a comprehensive event calendar, and other useful information and links.

Of course, Tsao added, SEMI is perhaps most well known for the high-caliber international conferences and trade shows that it organizes. Among these, the company’s FPD conferences, held in several different locations each year, are some of its biggest and most successful conferences.

The particular benefit of the Taiwan expo, Tsao explained, is that it will familiarize local manufacturers with foreign products and expertise — from North America, Europe and beyond. What’s more—on a lighter note—those who attend the conference will be eligible to compete in a racing game for a chance to bring home a 32-inch LCD TV.

Meanwhile, the opening day of workshops at the concurrently held IDMC ‘07 presents a wonderful opportunity for Taiwan’s university students in this field, said Dr. Han-Ping D. Shieh, the chairman of SID Taipei Chapter.

Featured speakers include Dr. Lai-Juh Chen of AUO (Taiwan), who will speak on LCD Technology; Dr. Mary Lou Jepson of OLPC (USA), who will speak on Display Applications; and Dr. Guido Aelbers of Polymer Vision (USA), who will speak of Flexible Displays.

A total of 258 papers in all will be presented over the course of the conference, Shieh added, marking an increase from the previous IDMC, held in 2005.
