Design competition awards given

The winners of the 2003 Taiwan International Design Competition and the 2003 Taiwan Outstanding Design Award were announced yesterday in the Huashan Arts District, where a three-week long Taiwan Creative Design Expo is being held from Nov. 8 to 23.

The two competitions are aimed at lifting Taiwan's design capability and raising Taiwan people's awareness towards industrial designs. In his speech addressing the nominees, Premier Yu Shyi-kun stressed the importance of designs and said, "In the age of globalization when countries compete head-on worldwide, design and creativity have become unprecedentedly important."

As many as 356 pieces of design work from 25 countries, including South Korea, the U.S., Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, Denmark, mainland China, Brazil, Singapore and Spain, have participated in this year's Taiwan International Design Competition. The Memory Cue from two students at the National University of Science and Technology has won the first prize. The Memory Cue can serve as an electronic diary that stores precious memories. The second and third prizes went to Steven Walsh from the U.K. and Chen Lu-wei from Taiwan, respectively.

"Many ideas presented in the competition are wonderful. As many of these designers are still in school, they have brought along very open-minded ideas," said Manfred Wang, director of BenQ Corporation's Lifestyle Design Center. "We will consider collaborating with these outstanding designers," said Wang. BenQ is the sponsor of the competition. The 20 nominated design works are on display in the theme hall of the Taiwan Creative Design Expo.

In addition, the 2003 Taiwan Outstanding Design Award, which saw 192 industrial designs from local companies, was also given yesterday in the venue. Asustek Computer Inc., BenQ Corporation and Sumio Gardening Tools won the award.
